Day of Remembrance of the Victims of National Socialism, January 27, 2023, Lindenstraße Memorial Site.

The Lindenstrasse Memorial is one of the central places of remembrance and education in the state of Brandenburg. Situated in the heart of Potsdam in a former court and prison complex, the Lindenstrasse Memorial commemorates the political persecution and imprisonment suffered under the Nazi dictatorship, in the Soviet occupation zone, and in socialist East Germany, but also recalls how the Peaceful Revolution of 1989/90 brought the socialist dictatorship to an end.

In 1995, the Potsdam City Council officially recognized and established the historic court and prison complex at Lindenstrasse 54/55 as a place of remembrance and commemoration in the city by elevating its status to that of a memorial dedicated to the victims of political violence in the 20th century.

As curator for the historic site, the Lindenstrasse Memorial Foundation works to maintain the dignified environment appropriate for both personal and collective commemoration. While committed to the preservation of the nearly 300-year-old building complex, the foundation is also responsible for the scientific study of the site’s history and its functions, and above all to researching the fates of those who suffered there. According to the foundation’s statutes, the focus of remembrance and commemoration is on honoring the victims and all who were affected by the political persecution, imprisonment and violence under Germany’s 20th century dictatorships.

Space for collective remembrance
Since 1996, the Lindenstrasse Memorial has hosted official commemorations organized by the Lindenstrasse 54 support group or by the city of Potsdam (in some cases in collaboration with the state of Brandenburg). Examples include events held on January 27, the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of National Socialism, or on June 17 to commemorate the popular uprising in East Germany on that day in 1953.
These commemorative events receive logistical support from the Lindenstrasse Memorial Foundation and are often accompanied by a supporting program (lectures, readings, panel discussions, workshops, etc.).

Space for personal remembrance
For former inmates and their loved ones, the Lindenstrasse Memorial offers the appropriate setting for personal commemoration. The staff of the foundation is happy to provide any assistance and support they may need.
